What is made up of a combination of 3-4 different varietals, is fun to make, and even more fun to drink? Psst- the answer is in the title… Naggiar’s 2011 Mistero is the featured WOTM (wine of the month). Yes, yes, I hear you- the wine of the month thing has been a little hit-and-miss. After a few months of nada, you get two in one month! However, this post is just on one type of wine we make, not a varietal and the wine we make from it, per se. As I mentioned, Mistero is made from 3 or 4 varietals- Zinfandel, and 3 former WOTM’s- Syrah, Sangiovese, and/or the co-WOTM, Mourvedre. It has moderate to low tannin, good acidity, with loads of bright red fruit- think cherries and strawberries, all while being extremely approachable early on in its life (personal bio for a dating website, anyone?). We use a combination of American and French Oak in the final blend, with no more than 35% new oak in the final blend. To maintain its freshness, we bottle the wine within 12 to 14 months of harvest, intentionally choosing some of the brighter lots. All this makes for one very popular and versatile wine.
And just how popular and versatile is the 2011 Mistero? Why, it is only just our number one selling wine! The beauty of the Mistero is you just can’t go wrong with it. It’s light enough to please the white wine drinkers, yet, is still very much a red wine. It pairs with a wide range of dishes- from white meats, such as roast chicken to barbecue hamburgers, to pizza and spaghetti…all of the foods that make for great social gatherings. Fundraiser spaghetti feed? Ideal pairing. Saturday pizza and movie night? Slam dunk. Summertime outdoor barbecue? Totally fits the bill. 2015 Broncos vs 49ers SuperBowl party? Ok, that’s going a bit too far in more ways than one. Need a wine on hand that will work splendidly in a myriad of social situations (which might just include sitting around in your jammies binge-watching Breaking Bad)…then prepare to stock up on some 2011 Mistero!
